Since the Saw series came to an end, horror fans have waited to see what gore-fest Lionsgate would release next.  Well Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett delivered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival with their Slasher “You’re Next”.

The film mainly revolves around a wealthy family: Aubrey (the mom), Paul (the dad), Crispian (the middle son), Drake (the oldest son), Felix (the youngest son), and Aimee coming together to spend some time in their Missouri vacation house.  At dinner they start to be picked off one by one. Eventually Crispin’s girlfriend, Erin, reveals that she has survival training and starts to gather weapons and booby-trap the house to defend against the killers until the police arrive.

The film gives off the feel of an 80’s horror film, however in a way that’s not cheesy or satiric in nature. As such in 80’s film fashion it has nudity, but doesn’t abuse it. It has blood and gore, lots of it (at multiple points the killers write “YOU’RE NEXT” in the victim’s blood on the wall). Finally it has a plot, which a good handful of horror films these days seem to lack. The film has moments that will have you jump out of your seat, as well as twists and conflict between the family members that keep the film moving between murders. It all comes together at the end leaving the viewer wanting more.

All in all the film was definitely worthy and lucky to have been picked up by Lionsgate for release in a large number of countries around the world. I highly recommend seeing this film, it’s to DIE for!
