Accident On Hillstown Rd. Highlights Need For Change, At Intersection.
Many of you may have seen the gathering of balloons, flowers, candles and stuffed animals that, until recently, was surrounding a lamp post next to the Starbucks near MCC. Unfortunately that gathering of items was a somber memorial of the severe accident that took the life of a 5-month old infant and critically injured an 11-month old last month.
On September 5th from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Manchester Community College alerted students that the exit to Hillstown Rd. was closed do to a fatal accident on the corner of Spencer st and Hillstown Rd, preventing anyone from entering or leaving the campus. As well, exit 1 off I-384 was closed while the intersection was closed.
The crash involved 2 women in a SUV, with a 2 month old and 11 month old properly strapped into their car seats in back, and a 17 year old woman in a green sedan. The sedan suffered minimal damage, while the SUV rolled over multiple times, resulting in it resting on the light pole. The car struck the light pole in the middle of the roof, crushing in the car just above the children. While the drivers walked away unharmed, the 5 month old died after being taken to the hospital, and the 11-month old was in critical condition. No additional updates on the health of the 11-month old has been given.
In response to the accident Jan Petrowsky of Manchester wrote to the Hartford Courant, “the state needs to focus on the pattern of traffic at various times, and MCC should lessen the volume at critical times by staggering class times.”
In the time since the accident, Manchester Police have been investigating and reconstructing the scene with the help of witnesses and footage from cameras in the surrounding area.
